Infographic titled "What is G7?" explaining the Group of Seven as an international forum with seven member countries, key focus areas, and annual summits.

The G7, short for “Group of Seven,” is a group of seven of the world’s most advanced economies: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. These countries come together every year to discuss global economic issues, climate change, security, and more. Think of it as a roundtable meeting of powerful leaders trying to solve the world’s most pressing problems.

The G7 was created in the 1970s during a time of economic crisis. Leaders realized that working together could help stabilize global markets and prevent future issues. While the world has changed a lot since then, the G7 still plays an important role in international decision-making.

One key thing to know is that the G7 isn’t a formal organization like the United Nations. It doesn’t have a permanent office or staff. Instead, each year, a different member country hosts the G7 Summit and sets the agenda. For example, if Italy is hosting, its leaders choose what topics are most urgent to discuss that year.

The G7 also invites guest countries and experts to join conversations, especially when a global crisis—like a pandemic or war—requires broader cooperation.

You might wonder why some big economies like China or India aren’t part of it. That’s because the G7 is focused on high-income democracies with shared values, not just economic size.

In today’s complex world, the G7 tries to provide leadership and unity on global challenges—from promoting peace to supporting green energy transitions. While it doesn’t have the power to enforce laws, its influence often shapes policies and sparks international action.

As the world continues to shift, many are asking: should the G7 expand, evolve, or stay the same? That’s a conversation worth watching.
